Harold Gould (December 10, 1923 -- September 11, 2010) was an American character actor and voice actor born Harold Vernon Goldstein, best known for his television roles as Martin Morgenstern in Rhoda and Miles Webber in The Golden Girls. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he appeared in more than 300 television programs, 20 major films, and 100 stage productions, earning five Emmy Award nominations.1 He contributed a guest voice to Extreme Ghostbusters, appearing in the episode "The True Face of a Monster" (1997).

Early life

Born Harold Vernon Goldstein on December 10, 1923, in Schenectady, New York, Gould was raised in Colonie, New York in a Jewish household. His father Louis worked as a postal worker; his mother Lillian was a homemaker who also held a part-time position with the New York State Health Department. A strong student, he graduated as valedictorian of his high school class and initially enrolled at Albany Teachers College to study education.1

After two years of college, Gould enlisted in the United States Army and served in World War II with a chemical mortar battalion in France. He developed trench foot and was sent to England to recover, then returned to service in rail transport operations. Following the war, he switched his focus to drama, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. He continued at Cornell University, earning an MA in 1948 and a PhD in theatre in 1953. It was at Cornell that he met his future wife, Lea Vernon.1

Career

After completing his doctorate, Gould taught drama at Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia for three years, then joined the faculty at the University of California, Riverside, where he taught from 1956 to 1960. He made his professional acting debut in 1955, portraying Thomas Jefferson in the outdoor drama The Common Glory, and his film debut followed in 1962.1

Over the next five decades, Gould appeared in more than 300 television programs, 20 major films, and over 100 stage productions, earning five Emmy Award nominations.1

His most enduring television roles were Martin Morgenstern, the father of the title character, in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spinoff Rhoda (1974-1978), and Miles Webber, a college professor living in the Witness Protection Program and the longtime boyfriend of Rose Nylund, in The Golden Girls (1985-1992), where he appeared in 13 episodes across three seasons.1 Additional television credits include The Twilight Zone, Dennis the Menace, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Perry Mason, Hawaii Five-O, and Nip/Tuck, the last of which gave him his final screen credit in February 2010.1

On film, his most notable role was Kid Twist, a dapper confidence man, in the Academy Award-winning The Sting (1973). He also appeared in Woody Allen's Love and Death (1975) and Mel Brooks' Silent Movie.2

As a voice actor, Gould contributed the voice of the Dinosaur Chief in the Dinosaurs episode "Hurling Day" and provided narration as Old Denahi, an aged tribal elder, in the Disney animated feature Brother Bear (2003).2

Extreme Ghostbusters

Gould provided a guest voice in Extreme Ghostbusters during the series' 1997 run, appearing in the episode "The True Face of a Monster." It was his only appearance in the franchise.

Personal life

Gould married Lea Vernon, whom he had met while both were students at Cornell University. They remained married for 60 years and had three children: Joshua, Lowell, and Deborah.1

Death

Harold Gould died on September 11, 2010, at the Motion Picture and Television Fund retirement home in Woodland Hills, California. He was 86. The cause of death was prostate cancer.3
