Early life and education

Avery was born in Pughsville, Virginia, a community that is now part of Suffolk, Virginia. His mother was Florence J. Avery; his father denied paternity and was not listed on his birth certificate.1 The family moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey, where Avery attended and graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1963.1

After high school, Avery served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969.1 Following his discharge, he settled in San Diego, California, where he enrolled at San Diego Community College. His first stage role came in 1971, when he played God in the play J.B. at San Diego Community College.1 He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in drama and literature from UC San Diego's Thurgood Marshall College in 1976.1 While in San Diego, he also wrote television scripts and poetry for PBS, and he won an Emmy Award for producing Ameda Speaks: Poet James Avery.1

Career

Avery began building a television resume in the late 1970s and 1980s, appearing in guest roles on numerous series. His imposing physicality and distinctive deep voice made him a natural fit for both authoritative live-action characters and memorable animated villains.

His most recognized live-action role came when he was cast as Philip Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (NBC, 1990--1996), the sitcom that also launched Will Smith's acting career.1 Philip Banks, a wealthy Bel-Air attorney and later judge who takes in his troublesome nephew from West Philadelphia, became one of television's most beloved father figures. TV Guide ranked Banks #34 in its list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads."2 Avery appeared in all six seasons of the series.1

His other notable television credits included a recurring role as Judge Michael Conover on L.A. Law, Dr. Crippen in The Closer (2005--2007), and guest appearances on Grey's Anatomy, NYPD Blue, and Dallas.1 In film, he appeared in Fletch (1985), Nightflyers (1987), 8 Million Ways to Die (1986), and The Brady Bunch Movie (1995) as Steve Yeager.

Avery's voice work was equally prolific. He originated and played the Shredder -- the principal villain -- across 103 episodes of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series beginning in 1987, a performance that became a career signature.1 He voiced Haroud Hazi Bin in Disney's Aladdin animated series, James Rhodes / War Machine in the 1990s Iron Man animated series, and Junkyard Dog in Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling.1

Ghostbusters

The Real Ghostbusters

Avery was a recurring guest voice actor on The Real Ghostbusters, contributing to several episodes across different seasons. His most prominent role in the series was Killerwatt in the episode "Killerwatt," a powerful electrical ghost who proved one of the Ghostbusters' more challenging adversaries. In the same episode, he also voiced the Stove Ghoul. The Real Ghostbusters Complete Collection, Volume One's introduction to that episode notes that Avery was the featured guest star.3

He returned for additional episodes: in "Once Upon a Slime" he voiced a Giant, a House, and a Rabbit; in "Jailbusters" he voiced a Booming Voice, the Judge, and Jurors.

Extreme Ghostbusters

Avery's connection to the Ghostbusters animated universe extended into Extreme Ghostbusters, the 1997 continuation series. He appeared in the episode "Dry Spell."

Tribute in Transformers/Ghostbusters

Avery's legacy in both the Ghostbusters and TMNT universes was acknowledged in the IDW crossover comic Transformers/Ghostbusters. On page 8 of Issue #3, Janine Melnitz's call sheet contains several references to him: "O. Saki" alludes to Oroku Saki, the Shredder's real name, whose animated voice Avery provided; "Mr. Avery" is listed directly as a caller; and the partial phone number 555-194 references his birth year of 1945.4

Personal life

Avery married Barbara Waters in 1988.1 He had no biological children but was stepfather to Kevin Waters. His wife later served as dean of student life at Loyola Marymount University.1

Death

James Avery died on December 31, 2013, at Glendale Memorial Medical Center in Glendale, California, following complications from open heart surgery.5 He was 68 years old. He had suffered from severe coronary heart disease, as well as end-stage kidney disease and type-2 diabetes.6 His remains were cremated and scattered near the Pacific Ocean.1

Cast members from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air paid tribute, including Will Smith and Alfonso Ribeiro.1 In 2023, AveryFest, an annual African-American cultural festival, launched in Suffolk, Virginia, near his birthplace, in his honor.1
