Teaching
Before establishing himself as an actor, Ingle spent three decades as an educator. He began teaching English and theater at Hollywood High School in 1955, then transferred to Beverly Hills High School in 1964, where he taught drama until retiring in 1985.1 During that span he taught a remarkable range of students who went on to major careers, among them Nicolas Cage, Albert Brooks, Richard Dreyfuss, David Schwimmer, and Julie Kavner.1 He retired from teaching at age 57 to pursue acting full-time.
Acting
Ingle began his screen career after retiring from teaching. His first notable film role came in 1986 in David Byrne's True Stories. Other film appearances included Heathers (1988), RoboCop 2 (1990), Death Becomes Her (1992), Batman & Robin (1997), and Hostage (2005).2
His most prominent television role was Edward Quartermaine on ABC's General Hospital, which he took over in 1993 and played intermittently until his death, accumulating 576 episodes.2 The character was a wealthy and ruthless patriarch, and Ingle's portrayal became a touchstone of daytime drama. He was briefly written off the show in December 2003 but returned on a recurring basis from April 2006 onward.1 Between 2004 and 2006, he also played Mickey Horton on Days of Our Lives.1
In animation, Ingle voiced Mr. Threehorn (the stern father of Cera) in The Land Before Time franchise, a role he filled across multiple entries in the series from 1994 through 2007.1

Personal life and death
Ingle married Grace-Lynne Martin in 1954.1 The couple had five daughters together.3 Grace-Lynne died on February 11, 2012.1 John Ingle died on September 16, 2012, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 84, from cancer, approximately seven months after his wife.1
