Career
Mariano made his film debut in Tough Guys (1986), playing a prissy bank teller opposite Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas.1 Through the late 1980s he worked steadily in television dramas, landing guest roles on Matlock and the critically acclaimed Vietnam War series China Beach.1
He subsequently joined The Groundlings, the influential Los Angeles-based improv and sketch comedy troupe, where he developed his skill for celebrity impressions.1 A sketch he performed there, "De Niro Sings the Supremes," showcased his dead-on Robert De Niro impression and directly led to his breakout voice acting role.1
His most prominent live-action television role came with the NBC sitcom Caroline in the City (1995-1997), where he played Johnny the waiter in a recurring part spanning 14 episodes alongside star Lea Thompson.1 He later appeared in the HBO drama The Sopranos, playing Ralph Giorgio in the 2000 episode "Do Not Resuscitate,"2 and had a role in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005).1 More recently he appeared in Damien Chazelle's Babylon (2022).1
Animation
The Groundlings De Niro sketch brought Mariano to the attention of the Animaniacs creative team. He was cast as Bobby, a Manhattan pigeon in the recurring "Goodfeathers" segment, a parody of Goodfellas featuring three streetwise pigeons based on Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci. Mariano voiced Bobby (the De Niro analog) across 24 episodes of the Emmy Award-winning series, regularly deploying impressions of De Niro and Danny DeVito.3 The show won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Animated Program during its run.4
He later voiced Joe Dalton in the French animated series The Daltons (2010-2016), appearing in 191 episodes.3
Video Games
Mariano's voice work extended into major video game franchises. His credits include Final Fantasy XIII (2010), Star Wars: The Old Republic (2011), and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (2014), among other titles.3 He is also known for voicing Dirt Boss and Mondo Gecko in animated properties.
