Early life and education
Taylor was born in Houston, Texas, on October 25, 1950.1 He studied drama at the University of Houston, earning a BFA in Theatre Arts with a minor in English.1 His formal theatrical training laid the groundwork for the broad range of character work that would define his screen career.
Career
Taylor made his first screen appearance in a 1974 episode of Days of Our Lives,1 followed by his feature film debut in Mother, Jugs & Speed (1976).2 Through the late 1970s and 1980s he built a steady presence as a character actor in both film and episodic television, taking guest roles on series including M*A*S*H, CHiPs, Hotel, and House Calls.1
His most recognizable film work came in a string of high-profile studio comedies and genre pictures: he played Dr. Niles in Joe Dante's Innerspace (1987), Don Forrester in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989), and Jerry Manley in Arachnophobia (1990).2 All three were modestly budgeted but widely seen releases that kept Taylor visible to mainstream audiences.
On television, Taylor accumulated a long list of guest credits through the 1990s and 2000s, appearing in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Seinfeld, Ally McBeal, Home Improvement, Boston Public, Diagnosis: Murder, and Desperate Housewives, among many others.1 His most sustained live-action television engagement was a 20-episode recurring role as Dr. Louis Visconti on Melrose Place from 1997 to 1999.2 He also had a recurring stint on Saving Grace and later appeared in How to Get Away with Murder.1
Parallel to his on-camera work, Taylor developed an extensive voice-acting career in animation. He voiced Jimmy Olsen in the animated Superman series (1988) and Charlie Schumaker in The Mask: Animated Series (1995-1997).2 He contributed additional voices across 78 episodes each of Dexter's Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls, making him a notable behind-the-scenes presence in the Cartoon Network animation library of that era.2 Later film work includes a role as Thomas Fulton in High School Musical 2 (2007).2
Ghostbusters
Extreme Ghostbusters (1997)
Taylor voiced Leonard Bates, the guest-of-the-week lead in the Extreme Ghostbusters episode "Till Death Do We Start" (1997).3 Bates is a Long Island tax accountant who finds himself haunted by a spectral bride after a supernatural encounter, drawing in the new Ghostbusters team. Taylor's broad character-actor range and established voice-acting credentials made him a natural fit for the single-episode role.
