Early life and education
Leong was born in San Francisco, California. She trained as a dancer early in her career, touring with dance companies before transitioning to screen and stage acting.2 She earned a Master's degree in Dance from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).2
Career
Theater
Leong's most substantial work has been in theater. She was a member of the ensemble at Cornerstone Theater Company in Los Angeles for seventeen years, performing, writing, directing, and choreographing in over fifty productions at venues across the country, including the Mark Taper Forum, Arena Stage, The Public Theater, Classical Stage Company, Long Wharf, and the Pasadena Playhouse.2
Her notable roles at Cornerstone included Antigone in An Antigone Story, Medea in Medea/Macbeth/Cinderella, and Nina in A California Seagull. She received DramaLogue and Garland awards, along with LA Weekly and Ovation Award nominations, for her work there.2 Leong is also a playwright: her works include Attraction, Crossings: Journeys of Catholic Immigrants (a world premiere that received a Theatre L.A. Ovation Award nomination in 2002),2 and In a WORD, which she adapted for HIV/AIDS communities. She has directed short films including Head Trip and Long Term.
Beyond Cornerstone, Leong served as co-director of the Raven Group, a performance partnership.2 In 2022 she received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play for Out of Time, a collection of five new monologues by Asian American playwrights produced by NAATCO (National Asian American Theatre Company) and presented at The Public Theater in New York.34 She has also performed at American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.5
Film
Leong's film career began in the early 1980s, drawing on her background as a dancer and choreographer. Her early credits include Body Rock (1984), White Phantom (1987), on which she also served as choreographer, and The Wizard of Speed and Time (1988).1 After Ghostbusters II (1989), she appeared in the Eddie Murphy sequel Another 48 Hrs. (1990) as Angel Lee and in the martial arts drama Angel Town (1990) as Mr. Park's Connection. In 2001 she had an uncredited voice role in Pearl Harbor. Her later film credits include the Ben Affleck-directed Argo (2012) and The Bourne Legacy (2012).1
Television
Leong made her television debut on Fame in 1984.1 She played Ensign April Anaya aboard the USS Enterprise in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 4 episode "The Nth Degree" (1991).6 Her further television work includes ER (1998, 1999, and 2001), JAG, 7th Heaven, J.J. Abrams' Felicity (2000), Strong Medicine (2001), Judging Amy, Lizzie McGuire (2001), The Practice, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Revenge (2013).1
Ghostbusters II
In Ghostbusters II, Leong portrayed Spengler's Assistant, a research assistant working alongside Egon Spengler at the Institute for Advanced Theoretical Research. The character helps coordinate Egon's studies of human emotions, briefing him when each test is ready to begin. When Dana Barrett arrives at the lab to consult Egon about the incident on First Avenue, Spengler's Assistant is present during the meeting and continues organizing subsequent tests, including measurements of happiness and affection responses.
Personal life
Leong has a daughter, Tala (born 2003), with actor, writer, director, and composer Shishir Kurup.1
