Levine grew up in Los Angeles and began playing music at age 12. He and keyboardist Andrew Ampaya formed Test Your Reflex in the early 2000s, starting out in the rehearsal rooms of a teen center in Thousand Oaks, California.1 The group, which also included guitarist Ryan Clark, bassist Agustin Sanchez, and drummer Sal Cortez, cited classic albums such as U2's The Joshua Tree and Peter Gabriel's So as foundational influences.1
Test Your Reflex signed to RCA Records as teenagers and released their debut album The Burning Hour on April 24, 2007.3 The record peaked at No. 46 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.3 When the RCA contract concluded in 2009, Levine and Ampaya continued recording under the name No Country.1
While operating as No Country, Levine and former drummer Sal Cortez were cast in Karyn Kusama's horror-comedy Jennifer's Body (2009), playing on-screen members of the film's fictional indie band Low Shoulder.41 Beyond the cameo, Levine contributed more substantially to the film's music: he provided the singing voice for Adam Brody's character Nikolai Wolf, and worked with Brody to teach him the guitar parts for songs performed in the film, including "Through the Trees" and "One More Night," which appeared on the Jennifer's Body soundtrack.4
In late 2014, Levine and Ampaya rebranded and expanded the lineup to form Wildling.1 The new group included Justin Levine (Ryan's younger brother) on bass, Erik Janson on guitar, and Casey Wojtalewicz on drums.1 Wildling signed to Warner Bros. Records and released a self-titled EP in October 2015, featuring singles including "Hummingbird" and a collaboration with saxophonist Grace Kelly on "Like You Do."1 The band disbanded at the end of 2018.5
Levine appeared in the horror anthology film Southbound (2015), directed by a collective of filmmakers including Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath, and Radio Silence.2
After Wildling disbanded, Levine launched a solo career. He began writing acoustic material and tracked his debut solo EP, Good Things to Remember, at Boulevard Studios in Hollywood in early 2020, finishing the project with co-producer Kevin Ratterman (known for his work with My Morning Jacket and Ray LaMontagne) at Ratterman's home studio.56 The EP was released on November 19, 2021.5 Following the completion of recording, Levine spent three months in Oaxaca, Mexico before returning to Los Angeles for the release.5
In Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, Levine appears in the film's extended concert sequence (Chapters 8-9) as one of the Rock Guitarists in the fictional metal band Beasts of Mayhem.2 His real-life collaborator Andrew Ampaya also appeared in the same sequence. The Beasts of Mayhem performance serves as the catalyst for the Ghostbusters' first major public confrontation with a ghost, when the entity Mayhem possesses the stage and shoves the band's lead singer into the speaker stacks.
Levine's contribution extended behind the camera: he co-wrote both Beasts of Mayhem songs on the film's soundtrack with composer Theodore Shapiro. "Low Then High" is performed during Chapter 8 but was not included on the officially released soundtrack album. "Want Some More" is the second song. Shapiro himself also appeared in the concert sequence as the band's keyboardist.
