The issue features the full team of Egon Spengler, Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Winston Zeddemore, alongside the recurring Purgatory characters Janelle and Jiff. Ghostly antagonists include the crime boss Fred, Elliot Ness, J. Edgar Hoover, Jelly Bryce, Al Capone, the other assembled crime bosses, and a large two-headed demon. John Gotti appears in the closing sequence. Poltergeists and Angels round out the supernatural supporting cast.

    Plot

With Venkman's superpowers transferred away and Fred commanding an army of ghosts against the Ghostbusters, the battle in Purgatory reaches its peak. Fred traps Venkman using a Proton Stream, stripping him of his abilities. Stantz fears the worst, but Zeddemore refuses to quit. Three of the crime bosses flee through the Pipeline while Capone grapples with Ness. Stantz is also caught in a Proton Stream, leaving Spengler and Zeddemore surrounded by the mob. Capone orders Fred to finish off both the Ghostbusters and Ness. Sensing he holds the upper hand, Fred instead turns on Capone. Jiff smashes the Trap containing Venkman with a rock, freeing him.

Venkman flies up to Heaven seeking help from the Angels at the gate, but they cannot descend into Purgatory. He rockets back down and knocks Fred out of his host body. With Fred now materialised separately, Venkman reclaims his body and the Proton Pack and forces Fred's surrender. A large scaly two-headed demon then appears and claims a prior arrangement: it helped get Venkman into Purgatory, and in return it was promised Venkman's soul for eternity. Fred realises the crime bosses sold him out. Stantz argues that the deal specified the soul that was inside Venkman at the time, which was Fred's soul. The demon decides to simply eat them all. Venkman fires at the demon but cannot stop it alone; cranking up the power he holds it at bay while the team scrambles for the Trap. Fred retrieves the Trap and agrees to hand it over if the Ghostbusters bust the bosses who betrayed him. Zeddemore takes the Trap and opens it, pulling the demon in.

Without the demon's power sustaining him in Purgatory's oxygenless environment, the now-human Venkman collapses. The Ghostbusters and gangbusters round up Capone and Fred and rush Venkman through the Pipeline. Inside the Pipeline, Venkman passes out, but angelic voices promise assistance.

A week later, the three escaped crime bosses convene in a church and induct a new member: John Gotti. The four Ghostbusters, alive and restored to their human bodies, arrive and bust all four gangsters. Back at the Pipeline's real-world exit, Zeddemore says goodbye to Janelle, who returns to Purgatory with Jiff. The team departs with a new appreciation for mortality and a craving for deep dish pizza.

    Equipment

The issue depicts Proton Packs and Particle Throwers, Ghost Traps, Ecto Goggles, and a radio. Spengler mentions the Containment Unit after the demon is successfully trapped.

    Trivia and Notes

    • On page 6, Al Capone references the Prohibition Era during his fight with Ness.
    • The Angels refer to God as "The Lord."
    • On page 9, Venkman nicknames the Purgatory crimefighters the "Mod Squad of God," referencing the 1968-1973 television series about three young offenders given a chance to work as undercover detectives.
    • Ray mentions the film "Poltergeist" as the Ghostbusters pass through the Pipeline on page 19.
    • Ray references the East River when confronting the crime bosses.
    • On page 21, Spengler riffs on the phrase "sing like a canary" by substituting "Buteaogallus Urubitinga," the scientific name for the Great Black Hawk.
    • The crime bosses mention the Yakuza, who appeared briefly in Issue #1 before being trapped.
    • A copy of this issue appears at the 11:52 mark in the "Time Is But A Window: Ghostbusters II and Beyond" documentary included in the Ghostbusters 1 and 2 Gift Set (2014) Blu-ray release.
