Casio Micro Mini Calculator

2 min read

Search wikiSearch wiki

The Casio Micro-Mini is a small handheld calculator used by Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters (1984). It appears in the scene where the three founders mortgage Ray Stantz's family house to fund the start of the company. The exact model is a Casio Micro-Mini M-810.

It should not be confused with the Radio Shack PC-4 Calculator, the larger pocket computer Egon also uses elsewhere in the film.

Use in the film

After a deal is struck at the bank, Egon runs the numbers on the Casio Micro-Mini. Peter Venkman reassures Ray that he will not regret it and that everyone has three mortgages nowadays. Ray questions whether they should have settled at 19 percent without bargaining. Egon finishes a calculation and turns the screen to Ray, noting that the interest rate alone for the first five years comes to $95,000.

Models

The calculator was identified by Alex Newborn on the GBFans.com forums. While it is established as a Casio Micro-Mini, the line was produced in several models and finishes. The two closest candidates are the M-800 (in a smooth silver finish, rather than the speckled or holographic versions) and the M-810. The clearest difference between them is the placement of the power switch: the M-800 has its on/off switch on the front, while the M-810 has it on the side. The prop has since been pinned down as the M-810.

In other media

On cover B of Ghostbusters Year One issue #4 from IDW Publishing, Egon's Casio Micro-Mini Calculator from the film appears next to a Post-it note. The screen of the calculator on that cover reads 1984, the year of the original film.
