The Clippard Modular Valve, R-701, has a great cosmetic value to the gun. It is believed to act as one of the main adjustments for the particle stream. It is most likely what Venkman would have used to shorten his stream to prevent Spengler's face from being burned off in Ghostbusters.
The R-701 is made by the Clippard Minimatic corporation located in Cincinnati OH. It was one of the first found items for the Proton Packs, as it says right on its label what it is, and who makes it. The most amazing thing about it, is its still available from Clippard and hasn't changed in 25 years.

The Clippard R-701 is installed on the gun with the schematic and "R-701" side facing up, with the Clippard label towards the bottom of the gun. It is mounted using the screws that come with the valve, they are 10-32 size slotted round heads.Clippard Modular Valve R-331Found on Pack.Clippard #11752 Hose BarbThe Clippard #11752 barb is seen on the Proton Gun where the green hose is located near the switches.
