Early life
Biographical details about Sturgeon's early life and formal training have not been widely documented in public sources. His practical effects career is traceable to the early 1980s, when he was working as a special effects makeup artist in Los Angeles.
Career
Sturgeon's earliest documented credits place him in the special effects makeup department in the early 1980s, including work as a special effects makeup artist on David Cronenberg's Videodrome (1983).3 He also appeared as himself in the 2009 documentary Beware the Moon: Remembering 'An American Werewolf in London'4, a feature-length retrospective on John Landis's landmark 1981 horror film whose Rick Baker makeup effects won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Makeup.
Around 1991, Sturgeon co-founded Alterian, Inc. alongside fellow effects artists Tony Gardner and Chet Zar.5 Based in Los Angeles, Alterian became one of the industry's leading studios for prosthetic makeup and animatronic design, operating for more than three decades on projects spanning major studio films, television, commercials, and live events.
His filmography in puppetry, mechanical design, and effects spans a broad range of notable productions, including:3
- The Addams Family (1991): puppetry
- Army of Darkness (1992): puppeteer
- Hocus Pocus (1993): effects work

Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters (1984)
Sturgeon contributed to the original Ghostbusters as an uncredited puppeteer, working on the Terror Dog creatures.1 The Terror Dogs were the demonic forms possessing Dana Barrett and Louis Tully, and their full-scale animatronic operation required skilled puppeteers working together on set. His credit went unacknowledged in the film's final titles, which was common for effects crew on productions of that era.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
For Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Sturgeon returned to the franchise as one of the principal mechanical designers on the practical creature effects. Drawing directly on his hands-on experience with the original 1984 Terror Dog, he designed the mechanical head systems for the new animatronic. The internal mechanisms were built by Jurgen Heimann; operating the full creature required five to six puppeteers for close-up and over-the-shoulder shots alongside actors.1 Director Jason Reitman noted that having a tangible practical puppet on set gave performers a real creature to react to, which he credited with strengthening the effectiveness of the Terror Dog sequences.1
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
Sturgeon continued his involvement with the franchise on Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, contributing to the creature effects department with mechanical design work on the practical puppet built for the return of Slimer.2 The Frozen Empire production aimed to recreate the look and feel of the original 1984 puppet using practical construction methods.2
