Early life and education
Nanjiani was born on May 2, 1978, in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, the elder of two sons in a Sindhi Shia Muslim family.1 He attended St. Michael's Convent School for his O-Levels and Karachi Grammar School for his A-Levels.1 At eighteen he moved to the United States to study at Grinnell College in Iowa, graduating in 2001 with a double major in computer science and philosophy.13 He has said he had never seen a stand-up performance before college; a friend's recommendation of Jerry Seinfeld's HBO special introduced him to the form and set him on the path to comedy.3
Career
After Grinnell, Nanjiani moved to Chicago to pursue stand-up seriously, working open-mic nights and studying at the Second City training program. In 2007 he wrote and staged an autobiographical one-man show, performing it in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. He built a following on the comedy circuit and through podcasting, co-hosting the video-game podcast The Indoor Kids with Emily V. Gordon beginning in 2011, hosting The X-Files Files, and fronting the Comedy Central stand-up showcase The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail with Jonah Ray.1
His breakthrough came in 2014 with the role of Dinesh Chugtai, a cynical coder at a startup, on HBO's Silicon Valley, which he played across the show's run through 2019.1 In 2017 he co-wrote and starred in The Big Sick, a romantic comedy based on his real courtship of Gordon and her sudden, serious illness early in their relationship.4 The film became one of the year's most successful independent releases and earned Nanjiani and Gordon an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay along with the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay.1
Nanjiani's later work broadened his range considerably. He underwent a widely noted physical transformation to play the immortal, Bollywood-loving Eternal Kingo in Marvel's Eternals (2021). He appeared as the con-artist broker Haja Estree in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), and earned an Emmy nomination in the lead-actor category for portraying Chippendales founder Somen "Steve" Banerjee in the Hulu limited series Welcome to Chippendales (2022). He voiced a role in the animated feature Migration (2023) and joined the ensemble of the comedy-mystery series Only Murders in the Building (2024), sharing in that cast's Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.1 He has continued to work steadily in film, television, and stand-up.
Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Nanjiani plays Nadeem Razmaadi, a Queens-based sneaker reseller and self-described "licensed third party reseller" who unknowingly sets the events of the film in motion. After the death of his grandmother, Nadeem brings her possessions to Ray Stantz at Ray's Occult Books, unknowingly delivering the Orb of Garraka and triggering a crisis. The team subsequently discovers that Nadeem carries latent pyrokinetic ability, a power inherited from a lineage of Fire Masters, and the film follows his reluctant journey to claim that heritage and help stop Garraka.2
Nanjiani's character name was publicly revealed on January 15, 2024. In the March 2024 issue of SFX magazine (issue 376), the creative team described Nadeem's arc as "stepping up to the plate in a way that will allow him to become closer to his full potential," positioning him as a surrogate for the audience's own mix of skepticism and wonder at the world of the Ghostbusters.5
Costume and design
The costume department deliberately built Nadeem's wardrobe around Nike brand clothing throughout the film as a nod to his character's identity in sneaker culture. His blue Nike hoodie was sourced from a thrift store. A notable set piece is the "American Idle" outfit: the scripted joke about Nadeem's slacker persona, originally intended to read across the chest, was reworked by costume designer Alexis Forte to run vertically with paint splatters after a trial-and-error process.
Nadeem's Fire Master armor, worn in the film's climax, was inspired by an etched metal decorative fan that costume designer Ruth Myers found by chance at an antique mall. The armor itself was fabricated by Myers in collaboration with Makinarium Ltd at Pinewood Studios.
Key scenes
Nadeem's pyrokinetic ability is first demonstrated when Peter Venkman administers a deliberately off-putting interview at the Paranormal Research Center, noting that in his highly emotional state Nadeem was unconsciously manipulating an open flame. After extended coaching from Ray and Podcast, Nadeem masters the ability well enough to redirect a rogue Proton Stream during Possessor's attack on the Firehouse, and in the finale dons his grandmother's Fire Master armor to confront Garraka directly, using his pyrokinesis to thaw the frozen Ghostbusters and turn the tide of the battle.2
Personal life
Nanjiani has been married to writer and producer Emily V. Gordon since 2007; the two met in Chicago and co-wrote The Big Sick about their own relationship.14 Raised in a Shia Muslim household, he has described himself as an atheist as an adult.1
