Gary Grooberson is a summer school science teacher and seismologist who arrives in Summerville, Oklahoma to investigate the town's unusual seismic activity. He is an avid lifelong Ghostbusters fan who becomes romantically involved with Callie Spengler and an ally of the new Ghostbusters team during the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. By Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Grooberson has relocated to New York City and is a fully integrated member of the Ghostbusters operation.
Rudd improvised lines during a school interior scene in Ghostbusters: Afterlife beyond what was scripted. He also improvised the developing flirtation between Gary Grooberson and Callie Spengler (portrayed by Carrie Coon) during the Farmhouse sequences. During the production of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Rudd took a book prop from the set as a personal souvenir.
Beyond his Ghostbusters work, Rudd is widely recognized for playing Scott Lang / Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in Ant-Man (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Earlier career credits include Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) and recurring television roles on Sisters (1992-1995) and Friends (seventeen episodes, 2002-2004). He appeared in Parks and Recreation for five episodes between 2012 and 2015, and starred in all eight episodes of the Apple TV+ limited series The Shrink Next Door (2021).
