Trains, Brains and Ghostly Remains, Part Four

Winston Zeddemore has taken a solo job at The Olive, a Las Vegas hotel, in exchange for a free vacation with Tiyah Clarke. The offending spirit proves to be far more dangerous than a routine haunting. Winston tracks the Vegas Ghost from the hotel basement up to the kitchen on the second floor, where the ghost commandeers the available meat to form a Meat Golem, a Class VI Bi-Dimensional Attractor of Evan Shaner's own design. The battle spills into a banquet hall being used for the Ivo Shandor Awards. A loose wire then causes Winston's Compact Pack to fail, forcing a retreat. He calls Egon Spengler back at the Firehouse to troubleshoot the equipment remotely, fixes the pack, and ends the fight by firing a Boson Dart through a wall directly into the Golem and trapping the ghost.

Meanwhile, Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Kylie Griffin take the Marine Ecto-8 out to the Atlantic Ocean to board the John Milton, a ghost ship anchored in an ice mass. The vessel sank in mid-February 1858 after Captain Ephraim Harding misidentified a lighthouse on the return voyage from the Chincha Islands, causing the ship to run aground in a storm and killing everyone on board. The restless entity holding the ship together is the spirit of Francis Harding, the captain's teenage son, who was also lost in the sinking.

Peter and Ray resolve the case without a containment trap. They fly to Vineyard Haven, Tisbury, on Martha's Vineyard, where Captain Harding's body was recovered and interred at the Village Cemetery. They release Francis's captured spirit at his father's grave. Francis recognizes Captain Harding and his psychic bond to the John Milton construct is severed.

Characters: Winston Zeddemore, Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Kylie Griffin, Egon Spengler, Slimer, Vegas Ghost, Meat Golem, Crew of John Milton, Francis Harding, Captain Harding, Olive Manager.

Locations: Las Vegas (The Olive), Atlantic Ocean, Firehouse, Vineyard Haven (Village Cemetery).

Equipment: Compact Pack, Proton Pack, Ecto Goggles, P.K.E. Meter, Aura Video-Analyzer, Paranormal Containment Research Tank, Ghost Trap, Marine Ecto-8.

Visitation, Part Two

Ron Alexander and the Rookie are working a case at Nevermore Elementary School in Chicago, facing Rodefhiri. The entity requires five Ghost Traps to contain and cannot safely be stored in the main Containment Unit without risk of contaminating other entities. Winston later transports the five cement-sealed crates of Traps via Marine Ecto-8 and sinks them in a river as a permanent disposal solution.

Characters: Ron Alexander, Rookie, Rodefhiri, Jason (Brownstone Boy), Chicago Ghostbusters.

Location: Chicago (Nevermore Elementary School).

    Development

On June 13, 2013, IDW announced September as "IDW Gets Animated" month. Multiple series received variant covers homaging classic cartoons; the Retailer Incentive cover for this issue placed The Real Ghostbusters cast in place of Mystery Incorporated within the opening of the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? title sequence.

On July 11, 2013, Burnham teased the issue would feature an ice cavern. He sent the script to Evan Shaner on July 13. By early August, Shaner had begun designing the issue's monster and hinted at a Hi-C appearance and Tiyah Clarke. Schoening posted a preview of Cover A on September 7, confirming the Las Vegas setting and the Meat Golem's classification as a Class VI Bi-Dimensional Attractor using meat as its medium.

On September 4, 2013, Burnham confirmed the issue was being pushed from September to October, which placed both issues #8 and #9 in the same calendar month. The preview (cover, credits, and seven pages) went online on October 8, one day before release. Luis Delgado posted unlettered versions of pages 5, 11, 16, and 19 on November 10.

    Trivia

    • Peter's dialogue references the Ghostbusters' time in the Collectors' Limbo from Volume 2 issues #1-3. Ray separately references the team's escape from that limbo in issue #3.
    • The award ceremony disrupted by the Meat Golem at The Olive is named after Ivo Shandor.
    • There is a Twinkie by the phone on page 8, a nod to the first film.
    • Winston's quip about stingy hotel managers on page 18 echoes the confrontation with the Sedgewick Hotel manager in the original 1984 film.
    • Peter and Ray take Francis Harding to the Village Cemetery in Vineyard Haven, Tisbury, located on Martha's Vineyard in Dukes County, Massachusetts.
    • Nevermore Elementary School is a recurring stand-in for Edgar Allan Poe Elementary School.
    • The teacher at Nevermore is visually based on Sigourney Weaver; the student attacked by Rodefhiri is visually based on Kenny Carter from The Real Ghostbusters episode "The Boogieman Cometh." The Carter children's clock from that episode also appears in the scene.
    • Matt Prov of Cross the Streams makes a cameo as a student with glasses; Luis Delgado's "15" easter egg appears on the paper above his head.
    • A Jaguars T-shirt in the boy's closet is a visual reference to The Real Ghostbusters episode "Night Game."
    • The Brownstone Boy from Ghostbusters II appears on page 23 and heckles Ron Alexander with a spin on the line he originally used on Ray Stantz.
    • The officer escorting Ron and the Rookie out is visually based on the character played by Frank Oz in the Blues Brothers films.
    • Cover RI can be spotted in the bookcase in both the "Who You Gonna Call: A Ghostbusters Retrospective" and "Time Is But A Window: Ghostbusters II and Beyond" special features on the Ghostbusters 1 and 2 Gift Set (2014).
    • Francis Harding's dispersal in this issue's finale is summarized on page 32 of Insight Editions' Tobin's Spirit Guide.
    • The issue's title page uses the second printing of Volume 2 issue #1's cover, consistent with previous backup story chapters.
