I've been a fan of Ghostbusters and the franchise ever since that day back in 1984 when my uncle had to drag me to go see the film (I REALLY wanted to see Gremlins instead). A few years back I was commissioned to do Ghostbuster inspired artwork for a Halloween show and jumped at the chance to research the equipment -- reigniting my passion for the franchise.

It seems the consensus around here is that the ‘belt gizmo’ worn by the boys in gray is type of ‘black box’ for research and development. My question – is there any canonical evidence for this (either production notes or scripted items) or is it purely fan/hobbyist speculation as to what it is?
