Story
This issue picks up directly from the cliffhanger of issue one, in which Peter Venkman's body was taken over by Fred, a gangster ghost, while Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore were shot and killed in the street.
Fred, operating in Venkman's body and wearing the Ghostbusters' gear, has disposed of the three dead Ghostbusters' bodies by loading them into Ecto-1 and sinking it in the East River. He then meets with his four mob-boss ghosts in a church and announces he is quitting their organization, now that he has a physical body and a full set of proton pack equipment and no longer fears them.
Meanwhile, the three dead Ghostbusters arrive in Purgatory, a desolate, rocky wasteland populated by souls awaiting judgment. After Ray kills a mosquito, the three debate the rules of the afterlife: specifically, what would happen if you died while already dead. Their philosophical discussion is cut short when a grandmotherly woman leads a mob of Purgatory residents in attacking them. It turns out the trio's reputation has preceded them even in the afterlife, and not everyone there is pleased to see ghost exterminators. The Ghostbusters fight off the first wave and flee into a crowd.
Inside the crowd, Zeddemore spots a woman he recognizes, Janelle, and breaks away from the others to follow her. Ray and Egon find a quiet spot to regroup and reflect on their situation, missing Venkman. The respite is brief: the grandmotherly ringleader returns with a much larger mob, forcing the two to run again. They scramble up a steep hill, their pursuers stopping short at the summit because a large demon stands there. The demon declares that Ray and Egon have broken the rules by attempting to cross the border into the next realm and moves to attack.
Venkman then makes his entrance, pushing through the crowd with a group of new allies: J. Edgar Hoover, Elliot Ness, and Jelly Bryce, all notable law-enforcement figures in life. Venkman kills the demon and saves his teammates, reuniting with them in Purgatory as the issue ends.

Trivia
- On page five, Ray compares Purgatory to a "karmic Containment Unit."
- On page seven, Ray laments not having Tobin's Spirit Guide available as a reference while navigating Purgatory.
- The historical figures who appear alongside Venkman at the end of this issue are all famous American law-enforcement personalities: J. Edgar Hoover was the founding director of the FBI; Elliot Ness led the Prohibition-era investigation that brought down Al Capone; Jelly Bryce was a legendary FBI marksman. The choice of Venkman finding allies among famous lawmen in the afterlife mirrors the crime-boss ghost antagonists Fred works for.
