Characters

Mrs. Van Huego is a guest at the Sedgewick Hotel and owner of Fred. Doting and oblivious, she entrusts Fred to Morris Grout before heading out to socialize, unaware of the chaos that follows.

Fred is Mrs. Van Huego's small pet dog, kept at the Sedgewick. He is the episode's de facto protagonist alongside Slimer, eager to attend the Ghostbusters' barbecue and get away from Grout's overbearing supervision.

Morris Grout is the manager of the Sedgewick Hotel. Impatient and controlling, he hires Bruiser specifically to keep Fred confined to Van Huego's room rather than deal with the dog himself.

Bruiser is a large, highly trained guard dog hired by Morris Grout. He knows an extensive command vocabulary, including sit, stand, beg, roll over, point, play dead, shake, jump, go, and come. Bruiser is the main obstacle Slimer must overcome in the episode.

The following main cast members appear in cameo roles at the Firehouse barbecue: Egon Spengler, Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Winston Zeddemore. Luigi and Chilly Cooper also appear briefly at the barbecue.

Locations

Sedgewick Hotel serves as the primary setting. Mrs. Van Huego's condo and the hotel kitchen are featured prominently in the chase sequences.

Firehouse appears in the final act, where the Ghostbusters' rooftop barbecue is taking place. The barbecue is the destination Slimer and Fred are trying to reach throughout the episode.

Plot

Mrs. Van Huego says her goodbyes to Fred outside her Sedgewick Hotel condo and heads out to socialize, leaving Fred in the care of hotel manager Morris Grout. Before she leaves, Fred blows a razzberry at Morris rather than kiss him, foreshadowing their mutual disdain. Once Van Huego is gone, Slimer pops out of a portrait of her on the wall and invites Fred to the Ghostbusters' barbecue at the Firehouse.

Morris, anticipating trouble, returns with Bruiser, a large and extensively trained guard dog. After demonstrating Bruiser's full command repertoire, Morris lets Bruiser bark Fred back into the condo. Bruiser then locks a series of deadbolts on the front door and stands watch.

Slimer attempts to spook Bruiser but is blown inside as well. Undeterred, Slimer opens a can of dog food to lure Bruiser into the kitchen, then boards the kitchen door shut, trapping him. Slimer and Fred reach the front door, only to find Bruiser already waiting there. They slam the door on him and run for the elevator.

In the hotel kitchen, Bruiser pops out of a boiling pot and grabs Slimer, launching him into the lobby just as Morris is assuring a caller that the Sedgewick is definitely not haunted. Slimer snatches Morris's command whistle and uses it to order Bruiser through a rapid series of exercises, back flips, front flips, and finally an instruction to go home. Bruiser hails a taxi and leaves. In the commotion, Bruiser, Slimer, and Fred all barrel over Morris.

At the Firehouse rooftop barbecue, Egon and Luigi talk at the grill, Chilly Cooper and Peter chat at the table, Winston gets cake, and Ray bites into a sandwich. Slimer and Fred settle into a large pile of food. Peter brings over more of his special-recipe ribs. Down on the street, Morris calls for Fred in vain. Peter thinks he hears something, but Slimer and Fred keep eating.

Trivia

  • Bruiser impersonates the way Popeye the Sailor eats his spinach in one scene.
  • Four sequences from this episode were reused in the Slimer! credits: Fred being blown away, Slimer trying to scare Bruiser, Slimer being slimed into the portrait on the wall, and Bruiser treating Slimer like a rubber band.
