Plot
Slimer was flying down a street when Mrs. Van Huego's limousine passed by. He spotted Fred in the rear window, pleading for help. Van Huego pulled Fred down and assured him he would have a wonderful time at obedience school. They arrived at Happy Tails Obedience School, where Fred clung to the back seats and the passenger door before Van Huego managed to drag him to the entrance.
Mrs. Stone greeted them and promised to whip Fred into shape in no time. She summoned Bruiser, a large dog who served as her enforcer, and ordered him to take Fred to the others. Slimer, watching from behind a tree, grew concerned and hid in a supply closet. He fashioned a disguise from a mop and a duster to pass himself off as a Puli dog and slipped into line next to Fred.
The obstacle course went badly for the other dogs, but Slimer spooked Fred into jumping over a log wall and blew a raspberry at Bruiser. Bruiser charged after Slimer, slipped on a patch of slime, and tumbled over a ledge into a river below, eventually bouncing off a log and going over a waterfall before a branch launched him back into Stone's office. Stone, in turn, kicked Bruiser outside. For the fetching lesson, Bruiser activated a machine that launched rolled-up newspapers. Slimer grabbed one, noted it was a Tuesday, ate it, and then tampered with the machine until it buried the entire school in newspapers, covering Mrs. Stone completely.
When Mrs. Van Huego arrived to collect Fred, he leaped into her arms. Stone and Bruiser, eager to be rid of them, hurriedly declared that Fred had completed every course and fulfilled all graduation requirements. They handed Fred his diploma and boarded up the school. Van Huego, proud of Fred, had the driver open the trunk, which was packed with treats. Slimer rubbed up against her, and she let Fred share a bone with his mysterious new friend.
Characters
Slimer is the main protagonist of the Slimer! segments, here going undercover at obedience school to help his friend Fred.
Fred is Mrs. Van Huego's dog, a recurring presence in the Slimer! segments. In this episode he is enrolled in Happy Tails Obedience School against his will.
Mrs. Van Huego is Fred's wealthy owner. She is voiced by guest voice actress Fay DeWitt.
Mrs. Stone runs Happy Tails Obedience School and presents a cheerful face to pet owners while running her program as a harsh boot camp. She adds "magna cum laude" to Fred's diploma, a Latin distinction for above-average academic performance, when dismissing Fred and Slimer from the school.
Bruiser is a large dog who serves as Mrs. Stone's enforcer and drill instructor. He is repeatedly humiliated by Slimer throughout the episode and finally ejected from the school by Stone herself.
Equipment
Happy Tails Newspaper Throwing Machine: A device Bruiser operates to run the fetching lesson. It fires rolled-up newspapers at the dogs. Slimer tampers with the machine and causes it to launch newspapers en masse, burying Mrs. Stone.
Locations
Happy Tails Obedience School: The episode's primary setting, a dog obedience facility run by Mrs. Stone. It presents itself as a reputable school but operates more like a military boot camp, with Bruiser enforcing rigorous (and brutal) training drills.
Mrs. Van Huego's Limousine serves as transport to and from the school. Fred attempts to escape the car before being brought inside the school at the start of the episode, and the limousine's trunk is revealed at the end to be stocked with treats for him.
Trivia
- The episode was recorded on August 3, 1988, roughly six months before its February 1989 air date.
- Mrs. Stone adds "magna cum laude" to Fred's diploma, a Latin academic distinction meaning above-average grades and performance.
- The title "Dog Days" was later reused for a Season 1 episode of Extreme Ghostbusters in 1997, making it the only Slimer! episode title to be recycled for a later Ghostbusters series.
