Voice Cast

  • Frank Welker as Slimer (Lead Cast)
  • Charlie Adler as the Tourist Alien (Recurring Cast)

Plot

From the second floor of the Firehouse, Slimer attempts some stargazing with a telescope, though he is actually training it on a billboard advertising an ice cream sundae and a blimp shaped like a hot dog. The rooftop peace is broken when a flying saucer lands up top and a small extraterrestrial emerges, immediately snapping photographs of Slimer. After some confusion, Slimer works out that the alien is a tourist on vacation: the visitor produces brochures for Paris, Britain, New York, and Rome. The alien tries to recruit Slimer as a guide, but Slimer refuses and the alien departs, visibly dejected.

Seeing the alien wandering into city traffic, Slimer relents, rescues him from the chaos, and agrees to tag along. The alien resumes photographing everything in sight. Their sightseeing is soon interrupted when a giant delivery rocket lands on the Firehouse roof, and a large robot exits and crushes the tourist's saucer. The robot locks on to Slimer and the alien and gives chase, but falls from the rooftop and hits the pavement.

The alien detours into the Plaza East construction site. Slimer acts as a living bridge across the girders while the robot attempts to follow using suction-cup wheels, only to fall again and have a girder land on top of it. The pair next visit the Central Park Zoo, where the alien wanders into the crocodile exhibit and steps directly into one of the crocodile's mouths, calmly taking photographs. Slimer pries the crocodile's jaws open and hauls the alien out. The robot drops into the exhibit on their heels, the crocodile swallows it and promptly spits it back out, then runs to a water fountain to gargle.

Back at the Firehouse roof, the robot corners them at last. The confrontation turns out to be anticlimactic: the robot's only mission was to deliver film for the alien's camera, which had been empty the whole trip. The alien loads the film, but before he can head out to re-shoot everything, the robot hauls him back into the saucer, tows it into the rocket, and departs Earth. The alien gets a final snapshot of Slimer for his vacation album on the way out.

Characters

  • Slimer: protagonist. Acts as tour guide despite his initial reluctance.
  • Tourist Alien: a small, cheerful extraterrestrial on a sightseeing vacation. Voiced by Charlie Adler. The stickers on his saucer are travel decals referencing his prior destinations (see Trivia).
  • Delivery Robot: a large, lumbering robot dispatched only to deliver film for the alien's camera. Repeatedly falls or gets crushed during the chase, echoing slapstick cartoon conventions. It is benign; its intimidating pursuit is entirely a misunderstanding.

Equipment and Locations

  • Tourist Alien's Saucer: the alien's personal spacecraft, destroyed when the delivery robot's rocket lands on the Firehouse roof.
  • Delivery Robot's Rocket: the large vessel that brings the robot to Earth.
  • Firehouse: the episode's base of operations and the landing site for both the alien's saucer and the delivery rocket.
  • Plaza East construction site: chase setpiece; Slimer uses the girders as stepping stones.
  • Central Park Zoo: crocodile exhibit visited during the tour.

Trivia

  • The episode was recorded on August 10, 1988.
  • The travel stickers on the Tourist Alien's saucer reference Mars, the Van Allen Radiation Belt, a play on Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon," Pluto, the Milky Way, the Little Dipper constellation, Saturn, Neptune, and the 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey."
  • The delivery robot plummeting repeatedly from the Plaza East construction site is a deliberate nod to Wile E. Coyote's signature falls in the Looney Tunes shorts.
  • Series regular Charlie Adler voices the Tourist Alien.
